Introducing the Indiana Wind Symphony
Indiana Wind Symphony facts

The Indiana Wind Symphony, founded in 1997, has as its mission the presentation of artistic performances of significant music for band and wind ensemble to the Central Indiana community. The ensemble is made up of sixty-five members, and includes professional musicians, music educators, and serious avocational musicians. The group has presented American premieres of several important works, including Save the Sea Symphony, Concerto for Four Saxophones and Band, and Concerto for Symphonic Band of Hungarian composer Frigyes Hidas, Werner Bruggemann's piano concerto Rike, Hardy Mertens' Symphonic Variations, and Nocturne by Thomas Doss. In 1998, the Indiana Wind Symphony recorded original manuscripts from the John Philip Sousa archives. These works, featuring soprano soloist Ann Conrad, were received with high acclaim at the international conference of the Society for the Preservation and Investigation of Band Music (IGEB) in Banska Bystrica, Slovakia. The 2005-2006 season will bring exciting compositions and inspiring soloists. We are excited to perform two concerts at the wonderful new Zionsville Performing Arts Center and to return to perform at Ben Davis High School and the Pike Performing Arts Center. We will play for the first time in the fine auditorium at Lawrence Central High School in March. We will celebrate important anniversaries such as the 250th of the birth of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the 300th of Benjamin Franklin, play our first travelogue concert and see the sights of Paris with the music inspired by them, and play the world premiere of an important new major work, Symphony #2 by Czech composer Jiri Laburda. The chamber wind music series will feature two masterpieces by Mozart and the Indiana premiere of Adam Gorb's French Dances Revisited, a work that was commissioned by a consortium that included the IWS
